Submissions

We are always looking to work with writers, artists, and photographers who are interested in creating stories about theater.

If you would like to write for The Hat, please tell us your story idea in 1–2 paragraphs and what category it falls under (see below for the kinds of pieces we publish).

The Hat does not publish show reviews and does not cover Broadway.

Submit pitches to Colin & Kara at editors@readthehat.com with the word “Pitch” in the subject line. Please include links to previous work, if you have them.

We are committed to providing editorial support and paying industry rates.

Features

Our reported features cover upcoming Off-Broadway productions. These can be profiles of theater companies, productions, or individuals; explorations of creative processes and artistic innovations; examinations of challenges facing small theater productions; or coverage of emerging talent. We’re particularly interested in stories that reveal how Off-Broadway theater gets made.

Interviews

In-depth conversations with writers, actors, directors, artistic directors, and theater practitioners exploring the subject’s creative process, current projects, and perspective.

Essays

The Hat essays can be reflections on Off-Broadway theater (landmark productions, now-defunct theater companies, forgotten gems), analysis of trends, and personal experiences. They don’t need to directly cover the current theater season. We encourage writers to follow their obsessions, to reflect on productions or people that shaped them (as critics or as artists), to dive deeply.

Spotlights

In addition to monthly issues, The Hat publishes shorter, weekly pieces; these can be interviews, mini-essays, profiles—we want to know what’s capturing your attention in the theater world right now.
